Top Surf Books You Need To Read

The Shaka Library: top surf books for every level of surfer

There’s an endless list of surf books, from classics, guides and manuals, to those dedicated to culture — you could be reading about the sport for a while to come. We often get asked about our recommendations for some reading outside the water, so we decided to put together a list of our favourite surf-related books. Check out our top 8 below and start building your surf library today!

1. Surfing Illustrated: A Visual Guide to Wave Riding by John Robison

In our opinion, this book is a must for the first-time surfer serious about learning. Hundreds of pictures — comical, cartoon-like drawings — used to depict everything to do with surfing, from wave dynamics, riding techniques, etiquette, logistics, and so much more. The easy-to-understand presentation makes it easy for you to pick up the techniques, use them in the water, and go from kook to confident! Our favourite chapter is on wave formation and on how to read them.

2. Barbarian Days: A Surfing Life by William Finnegan

A classic in any surf reading list, this autobiography is one of obsession and enchantment. To many, surfing is just a spot. To surfers, it’s an addiction, an education, a sometimes-dangerous pastime, and ultimately, a way of life. This beautifully writing memoir will take you through decades of surf culture, locations untouched (then), and stories that would make anyone want to grab a board and get out there… in most cases. We always have a copy in our library, and many guests pick it up during their stay!

3. Let My People Go Surfing: The Education of a Reluctant Businessman by Yvon Chouinard

Owner Mike’s favourite book and guide to doing business, this “manual” from Patagonia’s Yvon Chouinard is a collection of his own stories of doing good and having adventures. A testament to doing business sustainably and focusing on the people, this book will leave an impression on entrepreneurs and outdoors enthusiast alike.

 4. The History of Surfing by Matt Warshaw

Like to know every possible fact about something before you do it and/or if you love it? This is the book for you. Based on 5 years of research and writing, at 500 pages, The History of Surfing is the bible for our favourite sport.

5. Kook: What Surfing Taught Me About Love, Life, and Catching the Perfect Wave by Peter Heller

A light, fun read, Kook is the author’s tale of going from beginner to wave shredder in a year.

“With vivid insight into this fascinating world, with all of its perils and pleasures, its absurdity and wonder. Exhilarating, entertaining, and moving, Kook is a love story between a man and his surfboard, a man and his girlfriend, a not-so-old man and the sea.”

6. Surf Craft: Design and the Culture of Board Riding by Richard Kenvin

Even a non-surfer can admit, surfboards are pieces of art. If one of the reasons you’re drawn to surfing is the beauty is all the different types of boards, this book is for you. A coffee table must!

7. Surf Shacks: An Eclectic Compilation of Surfers' Homes by gestalten

Live for the surf-boho-chic lifestyle that comes with surfing? Check out this collection of homes dedicated to the chilled-out beach lifestyle. Another coffee table must!

Noteable Mention

Surf Shack: Laid-Back Living by the Water — Another beauty for your coffee table and a design inspiration for us at Shaka.
