Frank Bauer, Co-Founder
Frank grew up in Florida and began surfing at the age of 12. “Surfing is not a sport to me, but rather a lifestyle”. When not in Costa Rica, he lives in Aspen, Colorado with his wife and two daughters, where he owns his own business and serves as a volunteer firefighter with the Aspen Volunteer Fire Department. Building and opening the retreat has been a dream come true and I am blessed by the support I have received and by the opportunity to make such an amazing dream come true”.
Mike Bienz, Co-Owner and Operator
Mike grew up in Canada and has recently taken over ownership of Shaka from the previous co founder Chris. He has a true zest for life and for surfing. He loves the art of teaching surfing to the guests and is fully ISA certified. Mike handles the day to day operations of Shaka while maintaining a close eye on our instruction programs. He is very passionate about Shaka and hopes to share his love of the community with all of our guests.
Megan, Yoga Instructor
Megan grew up near New Smyrna Beach in Florida. She spent many of her childhood and teenage years in the water and on the beach. She moved to Denver, CO in 1999 and remained there until 2012. She came to Shaka last November to participate in the volunteer program and ended up sticking around to be the resident yoga instructor.
When she’s not practicing yoga, you can find her on the beach pursuing her newest love…surfing! Her classes are challenging and playful, accommodating the novice practitioner, to the more advanced. Our intimate setting really allows our guests specialized instruction and personal care during their stay.
Jose grew up in Alajuela, but has lived in Manzanillo for 13 years. He attended the INA cooking college in Puntarenes and has been preparing delicious and healthy meals ever since. He enjoys mountain biking and playing soccer and is strongly connected to his family. Shaka is proud to have an amazing chef and awesome person. Jose is a true Artist.
Maria was born in San Carlos and is 27 years old. She is happily married and lives with her husband in Manzanillo. She has worked for Shaka for the past 4 years taking great care of our guests and their villas. Her family and the church are very important to her and she hopes to have children someday soon.
Carlos has been with Shaka since the very beginning. He helped build the retreat by sanding all of the teak throughout the property and then creating the landscaping that thrives today. He is truly a tree whisperer and has an amazing family with 5 kids. Carlos is our resident coconut hunter and you might be fortunate to get to watch this incredible display of free climbing skills.
